Apr 16, 2018Gertrude Elizabeth Manning Stuart Goodrich, 100, died March 21, 2018 at the Taylor Health Center, Bath NY. She was born April 16, 1918 to Fred W. and Maude Manning , Savona NY. She had two sisters: Thelma(2016) and Ida (1995). She was married to Chester Stuart for 51 years and Ernie Goodrich for 27 years. She is predeceased by her parents, sisters, two husbands, and two grandsons. She is survived by her 7 children: Donna Lee (Roy) Simpson, Peter (Karin) Stuart, Alan (Josette) Stuart, Teri Van Vliete, Melanie (Michael) Deets, Tawny (Lloyd) Beckmann, Gretchen Stuart; 20 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.Gertie graduated Savona Central School 1935, and married Chester Stuart, Bath NY, in June 1936. A few years after they were married, they built a home on Manning Avenue, not far from her childhood home, also on Manning Avenue. Gertie’s father’s family had come from Massachusetts to Savona in the 1800s as contractors to build the Damoth Hotel at the corner of East Lamoka Avenue and Main Street. The Mannings built several homes on the avenue which was then named after the family.Gertie and Chester’s first child arrived in October, 1937; their seventh and last in June, 1957. Another child, Gertie’s neice, Linda McGuire (Don) Rice was welcomed into the fold in the late 1950s. The household was always alive with activity, especially on Sundays when family and friends would visit. Gertie and Chester had beautiful singing voices and their love of music and their delightful harmonizing graced the family home. Music would become the essence of their ever-expanding family.Gertie was a hard-working woman. She cared for her children, with the help of her mother, Maude Nellis Manning, who lived next door, and she was also worked, long before it was fashionable, “outside the home.” During WWII, she worked at Corning Glass Works. During harvest time, she picked grapes on the hills surrounding the lakes near her home. When Chester became ill in the late 1960s and unable to work, she began working at Gran... (Steuben Courier)
